About Capital Women's Network
Supporting women in the capital region since 1978.
To provide networking opportunities for women that foster leadership positions, professional development, and community recognition.
Founded in Tallahassee, 1978
Capital Women's Network was established as part of a conscious and concerted effort to help women advance in business, the professions, and government — in an era when women were just beginning to diverge from their traditional roles in the American workforce and move into management, law, accounting, medicine, and even politics.
Working in concert with similar women's networking groups across Florida and the nation, CWN was determined to become a recognized force in helping women gain key leadership roles in their communities. Founding members — including Elizabeth Mann, Martha Barnett, Marilyn Larsen, and Helen Webb — even obtained lists of governmental boards and commissions in order to identify and lobby for the appointed positions women could fill.
Who can join
Any woman who is outstanding in her field — as a professional or community volunteer — or committed to the mission and objectives of CWN is eligible for membership. A current member in good standing may nominate an eligible candidate.
Our members are leaders
Since its founding, CWN has had its share of notable members who have distinguished themselves in their professions, their communities, and through the Network. Today our members are engaged and involved women who touch every part of the Tallahassee community — and much of Florida.
They sit on the boards of the major universities in town, the Florida Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, Zonta, Rotary, the Florida Democratic Party, the Tallahassee Garden Club, the Tallahassee Symphony Society, the American Red Cross, the PACE Center for Girls, Lee's Place, and many other organizations.
Supporting women's education
Our biggest focus as a group is the education of women. So often a woman must interrupt her education to care for loved ones, or for any of a myriad of other reasons. CWN offers scholarships for women returning to their studies who can benefit from financial assistance in reaching their educational goals, at these local institutions — including our newest scholarship at Florida A&M University:

Contributions can be made to any of these excellent educational institutions so that scholarships can continue being given to women who value education and the changes it makes — not only in their own lives, but in the lives of their entire family.
